What Am I Even Wearing?

WELCOME FALL. You are here now. You have officially taking up the roost and shooed my darling summertime away. It’s fine, I’m just a little stressed is all.

With cooler temps upon us, the next wave of trends is rolling in, too. I’ve been in a conundrum for the past two weeks as I feel a nip in the air when I walk to the train. One question pounds around in my cranium all morning as the J train inches towards Manhattan: “What am I wearing this season?” I’ve been pestering my friend Kate for months about what the new, hot boot will be, but she always shot me down saying it was too early and too hot to talk about fall. She was right.  But fall always got me buggin! I’ve never felt adequately wardrobed for autumn, it’s my worst season. I’ve never loved jeans and growing up, my corduroys always “swished, swished, swished” in such a way that I grew to hate most pants in general.

Determined to get it right, I start my research early. This year was tricky because things in the trend cycle are starting fresh—only the most daring and fabulous are in the know. We all knew to buy off the shoulder tops for summer this year, because only the coolest of the cool were wearing them last year.  At this point, I’m keeping my eyes on the stars. Thankfully, all of those glittering fashion plates are gathered at fashion weeks across the globe, so I found it fitting to report on what to wear through the eyes of the most talented street stylists—and photographers—out there. Here’s what to shop to nail Fall 2016 and spoiler alert(!)—if you’re a 90s baby, you’re in for a treat.

TREND 1 – EAT SPAGHETTI

I wasn’t kidding about 90s swag; it is back and it is alive. I vividly remember having a purple tee and lime green tank combo that I rocked in the 4th grade (circa 1994?) and envisioning a grown-up version of that ensemble on my now is still a little hard to swallow. I’ll dip my toe via the most 90s establishment out there: The Gap.

Quick take = Zara Tank + Gap Tee

TREND 2 – BLACK AND WHITE AND PRINTED ALL OVER

Praise The Lord for a great printed blouse, a statement piece all on its own. Tuck it into jeans on your way to Sunday brunch or trousers when you’re running late for work on Wednesdays. Pick up stress-free wearable ones from Zara or JCrew Factory or find treasured, glossy (read: high maintenance) ones at Equipment and ALC.

TREND 3 – COLD CLAVICLES

Get ready to keep freezing those shoulders off, babies, because the off the shoulder blouses and sweaters ain’t going anywhere! Trust, your arms will be warmed because crazy sleeves are all the rage too (see below). I’m looking at knits to stay cozy, but would be swayed for bright or ruffling versions when Saturday nights come a calling.

I’ll just leave these here for everyone to digest. Ready your wallets, ladies! It’s time to shop; I’ll be back later this week with a little more food fashion for thought.

Happy Monday, y’all.

xx – Haley

HHA Fashion Bracket: The Ultimate Prize

Is it just me or is it boring in here? Imagine my heartbreak as I turned on the red carpet coverage on Sunday night and…nothing. I am so sorry Hollywood, but you guys phoned it in this year. So many of the gowns just seemed uninspired, drab, or dated. I’m sorely disappointed, but then again, not every year can be 2014 aka The Year of Lupita.

I am, however, very pleased to relay that I have crowned my fashion bracket winners and as an added bonus, I’m including a lightning round Best and Worst Dressed list from The Academy Awards, because a little glitz-meets-snark never killed anyone.

First order of business: our winners. The HiHaleyannie Fashion Bracket Best Dressed Awards go to:

BRIE LARSON and EDDIE REDMAYNE and also EDDIE’S PREGNANT WIFE HANNAH!!!!

final bracket

My most sincere and envious congratulations to you three. Admittedly, I didn’t expect to give this award to a couple, but the Redmayne’s really brought it this year and there was simply no denying their power-couple prowess. Like any longtime actor finally relishing her red carpet run, Brie Larson took risks with her gowns, but goodness, she stood out. We didn’t have Lupita this year, but I certainly enjoyed The Year of Larson.

Eddie Redmayne + Hannah Bagshawe

Is there anything better than a couple in McQueen? Not this year! Even though Eddie mentioned that he was “sweating” in his velvet tux, it was worth a little dehydration. His perfectly cut suit made him look 7 feet tall with ease. Meanwhile, Hannah rocked out her “maternity gown” with a stunning halter neck covered in jagged gold. Power couples, take note: Black Is Back!

Brie Larson

Upon my first glance, I thought the tasteful, traditional fit of this A-Line gown was too easy to be so good. But a second look sold me. This striking blue gown cinched with a show-stopper belt, reigning in layers of textured, expertly-draped pleats, made this up and coming starlet shine brighter than the rest. Remember when JLaw showed up to her first Oscars a few years ago in the fitted, red Calvin Klein dress and everyone was all, “Who’s THAT?” This is that moment, all over again, for Brie Larson.

With our winners happily basking in the glow of our approval (#Millenials), let’s take a look at who gave them a run for their money in a lightning fast round of BEST DRESSED!

Olivia Wilde – Most Current

In a phrase: WOAH. Like, yes. Pleats and chokers FTW.

Daisy Ridley – Best in Chanel

In a phrase: Perfectly executed hemline. A tad old for her, nothing a slick-backed bun can’t fix.

Charlize Theron – MOST MOST

In a phrase: Okay ladies, let’s get in formation. Couture by Charlize.

Saoirse Ronan – Best Entrance

In a phrase: “I may be new here, but I totally know what’s up.”

And real, real quick, can we gently discuss these brave souls who were, as they say in sports, a swing and a miss? WORST DRESSED

Jared Leto – Worst Miss

In a phrase: PUFF

Sarah Silverman – Worst Fit

In a phrase: Spray tans don’t fix everything.

Alicia Vikander – Weirdest Choice

In a phrase: Melted butter popcorn.

Ahh, doesn’t that sass feel good? And with that, let’s kiss goodbye this award season! Thanks for following along. Next week, I’ll recap Fashion Month, so get your notebooks out—you’re gonna want to write this stuff down. 😉

Cheers y’all,

Haley

It’s Heating Up

The 2016 SAG awards have come and gone leaving nothing but some great memories, a few forgotten sequins, and, of course, updates to the HiHaleyannie Fashion Bracket! For such a subdued award ceremony—seriously, compared to the Golden Globes, the SAG awards are like a child’s birthday party, so thankful and G-rated—the stars really brought laid it out on the red carpet.  There were a few twists this round, but in all honesty, I was quite pleased with the results. Take a look at the standings:

full bracket 2

Our final two for the ladies are:

Alicia Vikander

Screen Shot 2016-02-11 at 10.40.43 PM

Photo Cred: Vogue.com

I’m not going to lie. I didn’t want her to win and I didn’t want her to be a frontrunner. I wanted her out the first round. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of her “films”, but Alicia’s red carpet run with Louis Vuitton has been too good to ignore. She did kick off the season at the Critics Choice Awards in Mary Katrantzou’s striking beaded gown, and now, this LV shift throws us for a loop. At first glance, it’s an unassuming number, but turn to the side and BOOM, that sky-high slit gives the perfect amount of leg. *Insert Leg Up On The Competition Joke Here*

Brie Larson

Screen Shot 2016-02-11 at 10.42.44 PM

As previously mentioned, sometimes the red carpet is inconsistent. Where was JLaw at the SAGs? I had her slated to win, but then she has the nerve to NOT SHOW UP to the SAGs?? Did she not consider my bracket?! The great news is that Brie Larson very much DID show up, and very much DID slay in this grecian Atelier Versace gown that loops, dips, and drapes in all the right places. Shout out to JLaw for tagging BLar back into the bracket. I may just grant you a pass card back into the bracket if you show at the Oscars. We’ll talk later.

And our final two for the men:

Eddie Redmayne (& Hannah Bagshawe)

Eddie wore his Dior tux like it was his first, last, and only tux. He stunned. But really, his expectant wife, Hannah, was super clutch. It’s been said many times that behind every great man is an even greater woman. But in Eddie’s case, she’s right next to him, and she’s wearing high-impact, floor-length sequins.

Ryan Gosling

I hate to say that Ryan Gosling has this in the bag, but like, he’s got this in the bag. The Gos is so confident in his looks that he doesn’t feel the need to rock the red carpet these days. Cheer up, shy guy, we’re all still staring at you in that Gucci midnight blue suit anyway.

Clearly, this isn’t over yet. Literally, it’s not because The Academy Awards are not until February 28th. Happy Valentine’s Day y’all, I’ll wrap this up in March!

Cheers,

Haley

On to the Next

“On to the Next” is one of my favorite phrases. A few years ago, my little brother and I graduated high school and college the same year, and I convinced my mom to get the Walmart bakery (I know, classy) to write it on our cake for the graduation party. Those blessed artisans at Walmart delivered—”On to the Next” was written in neat cursive; everyone at the party smiled and simultaneously tilted their head in confusion when they passed by our white cake with white icing and red accents. I didn’t care because a) I weirdly like doing things that throw people off and b) I was so ready for life beyond the textbook. This isn’t a plea to millennials to not go to school. Go to school, millennials. You don’t need a year to “pursue your YouTube channel full-time.”

As I shake off 2015, I’m staring down the blank slate that is 2016. I’ve made personal resolutions which include using my camera more, running more miles—the typical stab at being more creative and getting skinnier. (I’m toasting 2016 with a glass full of green juice.) But here’s what’s going on in THIS space, you know, just in case you’ve been wondering:

IMG_0765

I’m calling this my to-do list, rather than my resolutions, because everyone knows that resolutions never get completed and to-do lists, well, do, more often at least. Let me break it down for you.

  • More #BYOC – Bring Your Own Coffee is coming back! I’ll be highlighting more go-getters, more NYC ballers that I’ve crossed paths with over the past year.
  • More Shopping – Sorry guys, kindof forgot this was a style blog, not just a collection of pretty pictures. More posts featuring actual clothes you can buy.
  • More Closet Basics – I’m excited to be walking everyone through my closet basics, all the the things you should ABSOLUTELY have in your closet for no-fail, always-chic outfits.
  • Find affordable faux leather pants that are decent and look legit. DONE! I found these, they’re here. Go buy them.
  • The Big Hihaleyannie Project – this last one is still a bit secret, but it’ll be big and super fun when it happens. Stay. Tuned.

4 out of 5 things left to do. Are you ready to start shopping again? I am! On to the next…

Cheers,

Haley

Layer Up! Dresses Over Denim

It’s Saturday morning and I just came back from a quick three-mile run, it’s a balmy 65 degrees and feels like heaven. And side note – it’s November! November as in last November we had definitely turned the heat on and had most likely seen a snowflake at some point. I don’t know why the good Lord is choosing to bless the North with some very Southern-like weather but I am not going to argue. I’ve still not fully switched my closet over to my winter clothes, because, you know, pulling down my small bin sweaters is SOOO hard. To be fair, the sweaters are on the highest shelf of my closet. I mean, I have to get a stool or enlist Ryan for help. So of course you can understand why I haven’t done this yet.. #LazyGirl

One of my favorite outfit combos of late is the pairing a tunic dress with distressed jeans. The end result is an outfit that looks updated but still casual and cool. If you’re out of ideas for a weekend look, this I highly suggest. If you’re a newbie, definitely go for fitted or skinny distressed jeans and opt for a dress that does not have a super fitted waist. Think tunic or shirtdress styles. If you are a well-practiced layer-er, I dare you to go for a straighter leg jean. Do this with caution though. If your jeans are too wide and your dress too flowy, you may just look like a very bad version of an Olsen twin circa 2005. Just google Leandra Medine of Manrepeller or Miroslava Duma (Former VOGUE Russia editor) for help. Those girls layer like no one else.

And don’t forget to really ROCK this look out. I added my favorite stilettos, an amazing vintage felt hat and of course, a trusty bandana. Never thought I’d say “here comes the sun” in November..

Just to help out, I shopped a few outfits for both crowds – the new and not-so-novice. I also exclusively shopped the amazing Barney’s warehouse sale – prices are amazing until November 11th!

#FBF – Remembering September

WHAM BLAM KABLAM September is dead and gone and I’m not kidding, we are nine days into October and I just realized September is over. If “delayed style blogger” is not yet an established genre of blogging, I am sure as heck owning that label all on my own.

I have a friend who always jokes that I am not unlike Beyonce in that I somehow manage to fit 26 hours in a day. I get it all done. In September, much to my dismay, I did not get it all done. Thankfully, “accepting the situation” has been a running theme for me during 2015. I was dissappointed I didn’t catch much of NYFW last month and I’ve barely scratched the surface of all the ideas I have for Hihaleyannie.com. But situations much larger than my little dream of a blog are taking priority and I’m trying my best to accept the fact that, once again, things are not going to according to plan.

So we press on. And we write when we can, as well as we can.

Even though I attended a mere handful of fashion week events, I still tried my best to dress the part. Who knows, Fashion GPS might send out last minute show invites and I may just have the opportunity to take what I like to call an “executive lunch” and slip down to some abandoned West Side post office to take in a show. Not saying I did this during the work day, but I’m also not saying I didn’t do this. 😉

There’s a famous saying, “Dress for the job you want to have.” I aspire to be an editor so as I styled myself each morning during that first week of September, I asked myself, “Would Tonne Goodman or Amy Odell wear this?”

Whether it was a midday show on the West Side or discovering a new obsession-worthy line at the Hanley presentation that I rushed to after a long day at work, I’m so grateful to even experience a nanosecond of this industry. If you are kind and work hard, amazing things will happen. Here’s hoping.

Thanks for hanging with me. XX

Fashion To Go: NYFW SS16 RECAP

Now that the dust has settled it’s time to make a little sense of the flutter of layers and slits and skin and glitter that we’ve seen over the last 8 days. I’m breaking down {what I think were} the most talked about, most insta’d, snap chatted, and downright most ooh and aahed over shows from NYFW SS16.

First up, Proenza Schouler

proenza ss16
Admittedly, Proenza Schouler is not usually on my radar. Of course, I’m a big fan of the their bow shoe and the iconic PS1 bag, especially when I was selling it hand over foot during my Nordstrom days, but not noted on my end is what Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough have been sending down the runway the past few seasons. Trust that this lack of attention changes now because OH THE BEAUTY. PS models were all tied up in ribbon and bows but in the coolest, most un-sweet way. A bi-chromatic color palette, aside from small interjections of deep, saturated teals and reds, along with many ruffles and bared shoulders had me thinking of Spanish flamenco dancers. We saw this look with Dolce & Gabbana last season (and always) but PS showed flamencos dancing to the tune of FKA Twigs, eating dinner at the Nomad hotel and partying at the Boom Boom Room. Enter the age of the NYC Flamenco, catch it SS16.
Next, Public School
pub school
We all waited with anticipation for the Public School runway show as Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne find themselves in a whole new chapter. The pressure was on as the duo not only manned their own line but also taking over at DKNY this season to lend a much needed, refreshed eye. Add in the fact that their once underground line, Public School, has exploded and is now a household name (among the style-savvy set, at least). We have all been begging the question, “Will they deliver?” In a word: YEA BABY! It’s always a treat when a collection carries an invisible sign saying TRANSLATION NOT NEEDED. So many wearable pieces! Perforated silk tops, high-slit midi dresses to go over denim with ease and oversized sweaters that will no doubt be worn over white skinnies and pencil skirts come spring. There was a bit of confusion, though, when clean-lined tennis dresses and skirts piped in bright orange made an appearance on the runway, looking noticeably different from the rest of the models doused in black and blues. A little haphazard sure, but all items shown are still very high on my spring shopping list.
And Givenchy..
givenchy
Undoubtedly the most buzzed-about show, Ricardo Tisci’s SS16 Givenchy presentation paid kind homage to NYC’s past while simultaneously looking ahead to a very dark and sultry future, but in the best way possible. As a glowing orange sun dipped into the Hudson on the evening of September 11th, crowds waited on the highline for the show to begin. Simple silhouettes in tulle, lace, leather and beading added a dynamic aspect to the (yet again) bi-chromatic color palette. The texture took over for color, like a striking black and white photo. My favorite look was worn by Joan Smalls: a tight waisted, strapless gown volumized by massive tufts of fur (I think fur?). Wondering now which starlet will have the guts to wear it during award season.
givenchy mens
Most of the menswear lines presented in during the inaugural Men’s Fashion Week in July but Tisci preferred his boys and girls to fraternize together and what a lovely sight it was, like everyone was headed out to a very cool European ball. Givenchy suits are cut crisp and clean, no bags and no extra breaks – that’s my kinda suit. And nothing is sexier than a tshirt under a tuxedo blazer; also hoping famous dudes will for this look on the Red carpet. That means you, Ryan Gosling.  We simply cannot ignore that lace blouse and matching tie combo either.  I’m making a mental note to reach out to Givenchy’s PR team to see if they’ll make this for the girls. #OneLoveOneLace
Finally, Marc Jacobs
marc jacobs
Too many good looks from my always-favorite Marc Jacobs. My gateway drug to designer labels was the now defunct Marc by Marc line. Truly heartbroken to see the line go, but I was giddy when I saw the MBM girl hasn’t quite gone away. Jacobs designs for two girls; his namesake line, Marc Jacobs, is demure and secretly sexy. She’s covered up and walks with a secret on her lips. The Marc by Marc girl was rebellious and quirky. She is glam grunge, or maybe not glam at all. Set in the Ziegfeld theatre, models marched a red carpet runway, did a proper step and repeat and then sashayed right into that theatre full of spectators. Red white and blues smeared thoughout the color story made me think that American Grunge may be taking a victory lap. I’m crazy about the mismatched crest jacket and powder blue suit. Come spring, ring me up because I’m having it all.

That’s all for now!
More NYFW updates to come this week while we watch London fashion week unfold.
